Pet passport photos - How to create them for only 39 cents!

Mango and I are about to head out on our first International adventure. We have road-tripped across the United States North to South and East to West. Next up: Europe! We will be flying in about a week and the paperwork required has been quite the education!

Seriously, she needs a passport photo for her European Pet Passport which is many steps down the road we have traveled so far to get her ready for this trip. I had no idea how to get a pet passport and envisioned having her sit still at a UPS store while they took her photo. Online, most of the search results that came up were from the UK where this is a more common need.

Regardless of if your dog is a service dog or a pet, they will need the baseline paperwork of travel health certificates and vaccines. If you plan to get a European Pet Passport (which is not required for travel in Europe if you have the International Health Certificate and are coming from the U.S.), you will need passport photos for Fifi or Fido.

This is what I did and you can see the result.

I used Picmonkey because I use it for my business, but you could also use Canva or some other photo editor that you have or that is easy for you.

I did not think to drop out the background until after the fact, so that is something I can let you know after I get her the passport—if it matters. From looking online though, it looks like other animals have backgrounds in their photos.

  • I chose a photo I had of her and used Pickmonkey to size it to 2x2.

  • I then chose a 4x6 sized canvas and put quantity 2 of those on that custom sized image, with plenty of space so I could cut.

  • Saved that to my phone (forwarded it from my computer to text, then saved to camera roll).

  • Went to a really nice CVS that has CVS photo. You can search online to discern which CVS has these kiosks.

  • The super nice lady at CVS showed me how to do a color photo print on 4x6—which cost 39 cents.

  • Then she even cropped the photos for me and put them in a passport photo book.

In case you need to create this, I wanted to save you the hassle of figuring it out, and save you the money that some of the services I found wanted to charge.

Don’t forget to tell your animal about the upcoming trip.

Did you know that you can walk your pet or service animal through what will happen on the trip?

Whether you are traveling with your animal or leaving them with a friend, you can prepare them by providing a detailed itinerary in a way they can understand.

They are picking up all of this while you are planning and thinking about your trip, so this will come as no surprise for them in most or all cases. However, by consciously offering this level of clarity, it will smooth the way for them and also for you.

I share how to do this in the soundcloud audio “telling time with pets.” If you want this done for you, you are welcome to book a pet private. If it is a very simple itinerary and is close to the timing of pet clinic, you can sign up for pet clinic for this purpose. If it’s complicated or not close in time (within a few days) then please book a private.

(If there is no availability for a pet private it’s because we are traveling and our schedule is unpredictable. Please reach out or check back later).
